heraklion-airportThe airport of Heraklion (or Nikos Kazantzakis Airport) is an international airport and is the second most important airport in Greece. Located in New Alikarnasos is only 4 km from the city of Heraklion. Access to the airport is very easy as the urban bus routes carries at regular intervals during the day and the taxi will make the receipt and transfer of passengers even better.

Heraklion Airport has tremendous historical significance as in 1942 the conquerors turned it into one of the most well organized airports. A large share in this was the residents of the surrounding areas, who were forced in helping with the building and its operation. Many of them remember to this day the “chores” for the construction and transportation – loading the aircraft with water to be sent to Africa.

Testimonials and documents mention people to have said “the chores at our airport forced us to be there several hours a day, always in fear of an air raid.”

The passenger services started in 1946, and since then has been renovated and modernized with new buildings, new corridors and constantly enriched with new services for the convenience of passengers.
