Cavros – Georgioupoli – Kournas Lake

At the borders of the prefecture of Chania with the prefecture of Rethymno, about 40 kilometers east of Chania city, we meet Georgioupolis, a coastal town that is one of the top tourist destinations for holidays in Crete. Four (4) km east of Georgioupolis we find Kavros  a very long beach with crystal clear waters and golden sands.

Geographically it belongs Georgioupoli Apokoronou City, an area full of picturesque villages, lush nature, lakes and rivers. The most famous lake in Crete is here, the lake Kournas.

The square of Georgioupolis is full of people throughout the day. There is served morning coffee with breakfast at cafes, meal at noon at taverns and in the evening you can enjoy a drink at one of the bars of the region.

From about five minutes of the square is the small port of Georgioupolis in which flows Almiros River. Right and left of the port are beaches and many restaurants and cafes, so you can have a bite to eat or enjoy your coffee whilelooking at the magnificent beach.

At the edge of the harbor we find the small church of St. Nicholas, built on the pier that offers an idyllic landscape suitable for commemorative photos.

Kavros and the surrounding areas are recommended for groups of friends, families and couples as they have great tourist development and meet the needs of the visitor who seeks peaceful holidays, and the needs of one who wants to enjoy nightlife in the surrounding bars.

The area of ​​Kavros and Georgioupoli is ideal for excursions to neighboring villages of Apokoronas and each of them is particularly interesting either historically or architecturally. From there you can also visit Rethymnon and Chania or even end up in the South of Crete.

Four (4) km after Kavros we meet the picturesque Kournas with its magnificent natural freshwater lake, which is the only one that exists in Crete. Located in a cavity formed between hills with lush greenery ideal for afternoon walks in nature. You can even rent one of the bikes available at the lake and wander along watching the fish and birds that live there.

The lake of Kournas and the surrounding area are protected by the Natura 2000 sites and there live various species of fish and birds such as moorhens, eels, water snakes and rare two-colored turtles that are nature preserved.

If you happen to end up at Kavros and Georgioupoli its worth visiting Lake Kournas, walk on its shore, drink your coffee or eat at one of the traditional taverns. The scenery is beautiful and will compensate you.
